Police use forensic imaging for courtroom success
Forensic-image presentations to courts has helped put offenders in jail for a total of 460 years.
Using electronic courtroom presentations from West Yorkshire Police’s forensic imaging unit, 49 separate convictions have been reached since 2006.
Trials in high-profile cases such as the murder of PC Sharon Beshenivsky in Bradford and the Yorkshire Ripper hoax and have utilised the hi-tech presentations.
Officers in the unit use the latest forensic technology available including video enhancements of CCTV, 3D reconstructions and 360-degree interactive packages using 3D laser scanning of crime scenes.
The computer evidence is shown to courtrooms via a laptop linked to plasma screens which are placed around the court to allow easy viewing. Officers in West Yorkshire are the first to utilise the technology and the force offers its services to others. The technology allows juries to be better informed about evidence so their verdict is more considered.
